The daylighting of Liwan canal is not just an urban landscape project. Previously covered by a two-lane street, the canal served as a combined sewer, winding through the historical urban fabric. In order to provide a higher quality urban environment for such a dense city – 7.7 M central population – the Liwan district government approved daylighting 743 meters of the canal in 2010. The project removed the auto-traffic, replacing it with a clean waterway, touring boats, pedestrian walkways and more than 700 new trees. Sanitary sewage is carried in concrete box-pipes beneath the banks. Multiple levels of walkways, water features and bridges were created to provide visitors different experiences with water. New Lychee Trees along the canal restore the historical scenery described in ancient poems. Construction was completed in 7 months, opening to the public for the Asian Games in November, 2010. Urban Elephant is proud to have been involved as one of the major design teams, and to have participated through design, construction, and cooperation with all other consultants. The new canal has become one of the most popular places in the city since it opened.
